PVC

PVC ventilation pipe has a high resistance to corrosive chemicals and is favoured over traditional galvanised metal systems which have a risk of increased corrosion. The wall thickness of PVC pipe is thin, making it a very lightweight structure that can be hung from ceilings and roofs with little support. This pipe is not suitable for temperatures above 50°C and is widely used for fume ducting and extraction in the pharmaceutical industry. It is also an ideal thermoplastic to use in areas of high humidity such as water treatment plants, swimming pools and air scrubbing plants. PVC ducting systems can be assembled using either hot-air welding or glue.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene (PP) has a high bending strength with a relatively slippery surface. It has good chemical resistance to aqueous solutions of alkalis, acids and salts and is very resistant to absorbing moisture. It is resistant to corrosion and chemical leaks. Polypropylene can withstand temperatures up to 90°C for working use and will withstand short term exposure up to 110°C. Polypropylene sheet is available in two types: PPC (Polypropylene Copolymer) and PPH (Polypropylene Homopolymer)

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a lightweight shatter resistant plastic that is 250x stronger than glass and because of its durability, longevity and performance is considered a better alternative. It is very tough and versatile which makes it a great option for building and DIY projects and its strength makes it great for protective screens, armoured vehicles and windows Its ability to absorb heat means it is a good material for greenhouses and can be used in homes for its energy efficiency. Polycarbonate doesn’t burn and can be melted to its melting point, cooled and recycled. This allows it to be melted and injection moulded for further use. It is not scratch resistant, but this can be resolved by polishing and with good care can last about 10 years.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

ABS is a hard and sturdy plastic which has a high melting point and can withstand temperatures of up to 100°C. As well as being heat resistant it can be resistant to temperatures as low as -10°C and remains ridged and tough at this low temperature. ABS is stronger and more shock resistant that UPVC It is a popular plastic that is used for injection moulding products and is one of the most affordable plastics that is resistant to aqueous acids, alkalis, and strong impact. Unless protected ABS has poor UV resistance which will cause it to warp and if used continuously at a high temperature will degrade.
